Welcome to the 2019/2020 SMPS Upstate New York programming year!
When I first joined SMPS, I was a newbie in the AEC industry and a shy wallflower, immensely afraid of the word “networking” and unclear on many of the ins and outs of the (new to me) AEC industry. I was full of questions about not only how to best perform my role in the company I worked for at the time, but I also wondered where I could grow from that role.
At the start of my career I was eager to get to “what’s next” without fully focusing on “what’s now”. While that kind of forward thinking drive is not necessarily a bad thing, my time in this industry and with this organization has showed me that there is a pace for everything and a process, with each step along the way deserving careful consideration and attention, both for “what’s now”, and for “what’s next”.
Research, marketing planning, client and business development, proposals, promotional activity, and management – the six SMPS Domains of Practice – are all important and necessary steps to the success of any business, certainly, but the AEC market has very unique challenges.
SMPS to the rescue!
When I walked into my first SMPS program, I was immediately overwhelmed and excited at the same time – I quickly realized I was welcomed into the fold of a room full of people who had similar roles as me in their companies, more or less, and that I would be learning a lot from them.
To say I’ve learned a lot from my peers and through my SMPS membership is an understatement, and my goal for this year is to create more networking opportunities alonside valuable programming for our members and guests, of all levels. Our Education and Programs Director, Kate Calder, is working closely with me and the Education Committee to develop programming that aligns with the SMPS vision statement, business transformed through marketing leadership. You can be a leader at any stage in your career, and SMPS has taught me that – leadership is not just a role for the person at the top. I believe everyone can lead if given the chance to shine through their strengths.
I am excited for this year, and I hope you are too. Our board and committees were built with volunteers who are each leaders in their own way, and I am blown away by their enthusiasm. With such a sizeable board, it is my hope that no one volunteer is burdened with too much responsibility and that each of us – especially me – not only finds value in a team approach but also experiences personal growth. As a team we will work hard for you to provide the value you expect from our organization. I am surrounded by two “energizer bunny” Jesses – Jessica Smith, CPSM, your past president, and Jessica Burch, your president-elect, and only hope I can match their speed, if even a tiny bit.
I look forward to meeting you all at the various programs this year. On a final note, I can’t urge you enough to take advantage of MySMPS and explore as many communities as you are interested in. While face to face networking is always best, it’s amazing how the MySMPS communities reveal that there is much you can learn from, and much you have in common with, your peers all over the country. SMPS is the only organization dedicated to creating business opportunities in the AEC industry, and I’m honored to be your president.
