Winter is here, and we are deep in the thick of the 2019/2020 SMPS Upstate New York programming year! I have had the pleasure of meeting many of you at the various building tours that kicked off the year, and met even more members and non members at the Client Panel held September 22. I also heard many of your struggles and successes during our roundtable sessions held November 20, and with the survey results from late summer, we are working on more programming that meets your needs.
Stay tuned for our winter webinar series, focusing on core marketing skills that will benefit A/E/C marketers of all skill levels. These webinars will be held locally so travel is hopefully not an issue!
Members: I can’t urge you enough to take advantage of MySMPS and explore as many communities as you are interested in. While face to face networking is always best, it’s amazing how the MySMPS communities reveal that there is much you can learn from, and much you have in common with, your peers all over the country.
Non-members: As always, we invite you to reach out to any of the board members regarding the benefits of joining, and come check out our events to see for yourself. SMPS is the only organization dedicated to creating business opportunities in the AEC industry and we offer programming, networking, and personal growth opportunities that you just can't find anywhere else.

How long have you been a member and how did that come about?
I have been a member for the last 6 months now. As far as how my joining came about, it was more a matter of convenience at the time. My coworker was already a member and it made sense for me to join as well. The benefits of joining were very plain to see. SMPS membership provided a new community of marketing professionals willing to lend advice and support, which was particularly beneficial to someone completely unfamiliar with the A/E/C industries.
Can you share some insights about what you gain from attending programs?
Participation in these activities has allowed me to meet and collaborate with fellow directors from around the upstate area and it has helped foster the growth of my leadership and communication skills. The programs that I have attended through SMPS have been impactful in my evolution, both in my personal and professional growth. Attending the programs has always left me reinvigorated, which reaffirms the values of my membership. I encourage all my SMPS colleagues to regularly attend and witness the surge of enthusiasm when they return from participating in these programs.
What you find most valuable about your membership?
The value of joining is the sense of community that it provides. It’s reassuring to have a supportive peer network and being fairly new to the industry, I especially appreciate the extra guidance navigating unfamiliar territory. SMPS hosts many fun and informative events and those who I’ve met through the organization have all been open to helping and fun to be around.
Do you have any advice for getting the most out of membership for those considering membership?
Get out and participate! The only way to get the most out of your membership is to participate. If you are lucky enough to be close to all of the many programs and events, participate in them! Being located an hour away has been an issue for me on more than one occasion, yet, I still travel the distance to participate.
