Welcome to the start of a new chapter year! It is an honor and privilege to have the trust of my fellow members to lead this outstanding organization.
I would like to welcome our board of directors and thank everyone for their continued commitment to the SMPS Upstate New York Chapter. This year’s board has several familiar faces who have served our community for many years, as well as some new faces and voices ready to share ideas and improve our organization. We are all extremely excited for what lies ahead this year!
Thanks to each of you for your participation and responses to our 2020-2021 program planning survey. While the COVID-19 pandemic has hindered in-person meetings and conferences, we are committed to incorporating your feedback and providing you with new programming and educational opportunities. Until we are able to resume in-person events, we are pleased to announce we are continuing to host virtual events, providing us with the opportunity to connect with colleagues across the state. Our next event, Infographics 101: Tips and Tricks, will take place Tuesday, September 29th at 3:00 pm. I hope you join us in learning more about how we all can take advantage of this marketing communication tool.
In addition to our local chapter events, SMPS National has a wide variety of virtual educational opportunities, many of which are free to members. Don’t forget to take advantage of these benefits:
Thank you all for being a valuable part of our SMPS community. Please do not hesitate to contact me or any other member of the board with any questions or if you would like to become more involved.
Take care and stay healthy!
We are proud to announce the 2020-2021 Board Members!

How long have you been a member and how did that come about?
I became an SMPS member in September 2019. I learned about the organization from other members at the 2019 SUNY Physical Plant Administrators Association conference. I went to an SMPS meeting/social hour at the conference and made some great connections.
I fund my membership and professional education personally, so I am very interested to receive good information for the investment of time and funds. I have found SMPS to be an extremely valuable source of industry information as well as a “community of peers” to share and obtain ideas.
Insights about what you gain from your participation in programs and the board:
I find the topics at the monthly meetings to be valuable. It is always good to hear another person’s point of view. Often the “experts” offerings reaffirm what many of us are doing routinely out in the field.
What do you find most valuable about your membership?
The connection with other marketing staff from firms of varying sizes and service area focus is most valuable to me. I am still relatively new to the marketing of professional services and truly appreciate peers taking the time to clarify “how things are done in marketing professional services.”
I spent 25 years as an administrator of programs for people with developmental disabilities and mental illness, served as an Officer in the US Army, and also did a short stint in pharmaceutical sales. By way of comparison, marketing of professional services is a lot of fun and is rewarding in its own right.
Advice for getting the most out of membership for those considering joining:
I suggest utilizing the SMPS website. There is a trove of information available. Any issue that has come up in my firm, I have been able to access information to help me formulate a plan of attack. Most importantly, utilize your fellow members as a sounding board. Our peers are truly an exceptional and professional group.
Favorite SMPS Memory:
Initially connecting with the SMPS Upstate NY group during the 2019 SUNY PPAA conference. As the new person in the room everyone made me feel welcome. Thank you!
