M/E Engineering, now Salas O'Brien, is a MEP/FP Engineering firm based in New York State. In 2025, M/E merged with the nationally recognized Salas O’Brien, an engineering and technical services firm focused on advancing the human experience through the built environment.

M/E Engineering has 4 legacy offices located throughout New York State in Buffalo, Rochester, Syracuse, and Schenectady. Our offices join 105+ Salas O’Brien locations throughout North America.

How many employees does your firm have? 

Our local team of 200+ engineers and professionals is now part of a fast-growing team of 4,850 team members nationwide!

What is the geographic coverage of your firm? 

While many of our projects are located throughout New York State, our work spans the entire Northeast coast and beyond. Post-merger, our project capacity has reached new heights as we increasingly collaborate with Salas O’Brien offices across the country- expanding our services nationwide.

What services does your firm offer? What markets does your firm serve?

We provide a full range of engineering and technical consulting services for government and private sector clients, including MEP/FP, structural and civil engineering, technology and acoustics, commissioning, energy and sustainability (including geothermal and renewables), Computational Fluids Dynamic modeling, resource efficiency, digital and automation, building envelope and science, and asset management. 

We serve a variety of markets, including healthcare, education, housing, government/municipal, gaming/entertainment, hospitality, and manufacturing.

How many years has your firm been in business?
M/E Engineering was created in 1991 by 4 founding principals in Rochester, NY. Salas O’Brien was established in California in 1975, where it remains headquartered today.

Can you tell us about your firm's mission/vision? 

Salas O’Brien is an employee-owned engineering and technical services firm focused on advancing the human experience through the built environment. Our team is engineered for impact, helping clients achieve critical goals, advancing team members through growth and opportunity, and operating at the center of important global issues, including sustainability and decarbonization.

How would you describe your firm’s culture?

Our culture is deeply rooted in relationships; both in delivering consistent and reliable results for our clients and in developing each individual team member across our offices. There is a shared camaraderie among our employees in encouraging each other to bring the best version of themselves to work each day. Both work and personal wins are celebrated, making our team close-knit while also being several cities apart!

How have you seen your membership translate to benefits for your firm and its processes?

Our SMPS NY memberships have broadened our connections to others in the AEC industry and encouraged conversations with other firms. Shared knowledge is a valuable resource, which can pave the way for future opportunities and cross-collaboration.
